Fall 2013 CELLULAR ENDOCRINOLOGY SYLLABUS AND LECTURE SCHEDULE (5033)

TUESDAY AND THURSDAY
(1:00 P.M. to 2:30 P.M.)
8/19—12/20

Course Director: Dana Gaddy, Ph.D.  (686-5918; Biomed 2, Rm. 210-2)

1.         Lectures:  Tuesday and Thursday: 1:00 p.m. – 2:30 p.m.

2.         Reading Material:  Reading material will be peer-reviewed journal articles and reviews for each lecture. Reading material and copies of slides will be supplied by instructors a few days in advance of each lecture.

3.         Examinations:  Three (3) short answer/essay, focused on critical thinking   and experimental design, and open book exams, with points distributed equally for each lecture (10 points per lecture): Exam 1 = 100 points; Exam 2 = 100 points; Exam 3 = 80 points; Student Presentations = 20 points. Exams will be handed out on the Examination date. Tuesday exams will be due to course director by 5pm on Friday; Thursday exams will be due to course director by 5pm on Monday.

4.         Dates and times for Examinations

EXAM #1       September 24, 2013    Thursday         1:00 p.m.—Due 5pm Sept 27

The above scale of grades is meant to be a general guideline.  Letter grades may be adjusted to a lower percentage score, but will not be raised to a higher  percentage score.

6.         Student presentations:  Each student will select a signaling pathway and an endocrine system of regulation, and identify a primary journal article to discuss at the end of the semester. Selection will be made and course director approved by Class-time on October 31. During one of the 2 sessions in December, students will be responsible for giving a 20 minute oral presentation on their critical review of the journal article, and placing it in context with the known relevant signaling pathways in the article. Presentation is worth 20 points of total grade.
